About
This Project

KFM Geotech supported a 22-storey building development in Merrylands from investigation through to construction. The engagement covered geotechnical site investigation, groundwater monitoring, hydrogeological assessment, permeability testing, a dewatering management plan, vibration monitoring, inclinometer installation and movement monitoring, and construction-phase geotechnical support.

Scope of Works

Investigation & Groundwater

01

Geotechnical Site Investigation

Borehole drilling with rock coring, in-situ testing and laboratory testing to define the ground profile beneath the building footprint.
02

Groundwater Monitoring

Installation and monitoring of groundwater standpipes to establish water levels and how they vary over time.
03

Hydrogeological Assessment

Assessment of groundwater conditions and the inflow expected into the basement excavation.
04

Permeability Testing

Field permeability testing to derive the hydraulic parameters used in the dewatering assessment.
Construction Phase

Monitoring & Support

Inclinometer casing installed for ground movement monitoring at Merrylands, NSW
Rock core from borehole BH3, Merrylands NSW, cored 6.70–15.0 m
Groundwater level monitoring results plotted against rainfall, Merrylands NSW
01

Dewatering Management Plan

Preparation of the dewatering management plan governing extraction and discharge through the excavation.
02

Vibration Monitoring

Vibration logger installation and monitoring through piling and excavation adjacent to occupied properties.
03

Inclinometer Monitoring

Inclinometer installation and movement monitoring to track deflection of the retention system as excavation progressed.
04

Construction Phase Support

On-site geotechnical support through the construction phase, including inspection and testing at ground-related hold points.
Results

Project Outcomes

Groundwater, ground movement and vibration were monitored continuously alongside the construction-phase inspections, so the behaviour of the excavation and the surrounding ground was tracked against expectation as the building progressed.
